Do you struggle with finding joy in your home? Not the chores and constant grind of cooking and cleaning but our physical house.

The size, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, the layout, the lack of storage space. Are you content and able to create beauty in every room? Or do you find yourself loathing it, waiting for the next better house, and finding all the faults within its walls?

I’m raising my hand for the latter. Yep. Guilty as charged.

We moved from our dream house, a house I couldn’t wait to buy and never have to move again to a downsize not so perfect rental. The transition was hard. We tried everything in our power to not move and begged the Lord to allow us to continue renting our dream house, some way some how. But the funny thing about God is that He always knows what’s best for us even when we can’t see it.

The Lord didn’t answer those prayers and we drove away from everything I wanted in a house.

So you can only imagine how I feel about any other place we would’ve picked. Nothing could compare to best. So I’ve stopped caring. Why completely unpack, when we are just going to move again. Why decorate at all, we are just going to be moving again. Why even let myself start to like this house, we.are.just.going.to.move.again.

But you know what, I’m robbing myself of the joy that I could have while living here. I’m robbing my family of the joy they could be experiencing if I would decorate and make this little place a place of our own while we are here. I’m robbing my kids of seeing how mommy handles a situation with happiness and contentment even if she doesn’t quite like it.

Friend, if you’re like me you are robbing yourself. It’s time for an attitude adjustment. It’s time to find and create beauty in our less than perfect homes.

On the level of home life, beauty is the order and grace we bring to the waiting hours and spaces of our lives, the celebrations we choose, the rituals we make, the gardens we plant, the care we give with as much attention as we can muster. LGH p. 82
