From Sarah: I can’t believe she shared if Nancy Hanks Came Back As A Ghost.

I first read the poem in Grade school. I fell in love with it.

For those that don’t know who Nancy Hanks Is: She is the mother of Abraham Lincoln.

My fourth grade teacher recited this and then helped us memorize this poem. I’ve remembered the first stanza for almost 60 years. Time for a refresher.

    1. Shannon, For years the first stanza was all i really remembered as well. I knew parts of the whole poem but not all. I remember having a librarian look it up for me. That was way before the internet. Now it’s so easy to look something up.
Have a wonderful Week and a beautiful June. Stay Safe and healthy.

My blog and everything on it is so OUTDATED it’s not funny. The Original poem was written by “Nancy Hanks” is a song with music by Katherine Kennicott Davis and poetry by Rosemary Benét. The song is about Abraham Lincoln’s mother and was published in 1941.

The poem was first published in Benét’s 1933 volume A Book of Americans.
