The kids’ table can feel like an afterthought for a lot of people because you might think the kids don’t care. However, my kids always love when I make something a little more special for them and my daughter has even started looking forward to it on holidays and birthdays. I love seeing the delight in their eyes when I take a little more time to do something for them with all the chaos the holiday season brings.
I, very easily, get caught up in the details of cooking and all the food preparation. But at the end of the day, I’m most thankful for my family and the gift of motherhood these children have given me. Taking a few extra minutes to make something more special for them during these big celebrations is the least I can do in return.

Back in simpler times, people rang in the first of May with a particularly charming and elegant tradition: According to a report by NPR, they would take all theflowersthat they had gathered at the end of April’s showers, arrange them in pretty paper along with some gifts and candies, and then hang them on the doors of friends and neighbors as a way of welcoming them into warmer weather.
Of course, it was also a way of letting a romantic prospect know that you cared for her, as boys would often hang baskets on the doorknobs of the ladies they fancied.

Children give to grownups, instead of the other way around. On almost every other holiday, onlythe child receives gifts; they don’t get to experience the true joy of unselfish giving. My kids love giving the baskets to the neighbors as much as they enjoy getting candy from them on Halloween. The big part of the excitement has been trying to sneak around undetected.
Use brightly colored construction paper to make baskets by cutting the paper into triangle shapes. Roll the triangles into cone shaped baskets and glue or tape together, finish by adding a strip of construction paper to make a handle. Fill the basket with left over Easter grass, then add fresh flowers the children pick (even dandelions will do) or if you live in a cold climate, with no fresh flowers yet, cut pictures of flowers from magazines or gardening catalogs and glue them to toothpicks and arrange in the basket. Then have the child choose an elderly friend or relative to give their basket to.

Handing out May Day baskets is a charming and gentle activity for children and adults. It’s a tradition that Louisa May Alcott wrote of in “Jack and Jill” (Chapter 18):
“The job now in hand was May baskets, for it was the custom of the children to hang them on the doors of their friends the night before May-day; and the girls had agreed to supply baskets if the boys would hunt for flowers, much the harder task of the two. Jill had more leisure as well as taste and skill than the other girls, so she amused herself with making a goodly store of pretty baskets of all shapes, sizes, and colors, quite confident that they would be filled, though not a flower had shown its head except a few hardy dandelions, and here and there a small cluster of saxifrage.” (a type of herb called Greater Burnet
