Home {Alone} For Christmas – 10 Activities To Do With Your Littles On Christmas ⋆ A Little R & R

I’ll admit it – it was a lot easier preparing my heart to be alone on Christmas than it was to actually be alone on Christmas.

Okay – I wasn’t technically alone: I had my kids with me. But a 14-month old and an almost 3 year old do not really understand Christmas.

After the initial depression wore off, I decided I needed to be proactive and come up with a plan of distraction. Ever been there?

After a fun Facebook post where people shared their ideas, this is what we came up with!

Here are 10 activities you can do with your littles when you’re home alone for Christmas

12 Fun-Filled Days of Christmas ⋆ A Little R & R

But I have reserved a special activity for the 4 days leading up to Christmas
I took Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus from our nativity, plus a small mirror. I packed each in a separate gift bag. Each day we will open one bag and talk about that figure from the Christmas story – reserving the mirror for Christmas day. As the children look in the mirror, we will share with them that what they see is what Jesus wants for Christmas.

The Women of Christmas — A Little R & R

I sat on my couch with my swollen feet propped up on our coffee table. “Elevate your feet as much as you can”, my doctor had said. Leaning back, I could barely see the television screen over my big belly. My baby squirmed, jamming his feet in my ribs, in an effort to find a… via…

9 Advent Studies To Do This Christmas ⋆ A Little R & R

This is my favorite time of year: Thanksgiving…that leads to celebrating the Advent of Jesus Christ. Each December I set aside time to celebrate every part of the story that lead to the birth of our Savior….savoring each moment, studying each character.

I have done some of these studies and love them! These advent studies are an amazing way to prepare your heart to celebrate Christmas.

When my husband I first married, one of the cultural differences we noticed early on was how we traditionally celebrated Christmas. He grew up in the former Yugoslavia – far from the Currier & Ives, Hollywood style, millions of lights and huge yard sets-style Christmas I was used to. My parents drag out about a half-dozen boxes bulging with everything from evergreen garland, wreathes and outdoor lights to 40+ years of accumulated tree ornaments, wall hangings, candles and nick-knacks. The walls resound with Burl Ives’ “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas” and Bing Crosby’s crooning voice dreaming of a white Christmas. The house is a Christmas wonderland. As a kid I sometimes wondered if I was at the North Pole (except I grew up in the rainy northwest where we rarely ever saw snow.)

The Secret to a Perfect Christmas ⋆ A Little R & R

Why do we celebrate Christmas?

If all it is to us is a time to celebrate, be with family, eat good food and buy our kids the big toys they’ve wanted all year, we’ve turned it into a celebration of our own hedonistic desires. Christmas was never meant to be consumed by us – but to celebrate HIM!

If it becomes more about our own selfish appetites than about a celebration of one of the two greatest events of history, we’ve not only missed the point, we’ve defiled what is holy.

We must….must, must, must make Him the central figure of all we do.

Yes! Have fun, make a nice meal, enjoy the deserts, cookies and candy, give your children gifts, watch the romantic movies, and listen to the glorious music…there is nothing wrong in that. But, in all of that celebration, make sure that Jesus is still the center of it all.

Where to Start Reading in the Bible ⋆ A Little R & R

Perhaps you’re a Good Morning Girls partner and you’re stumped about where to read, since starting tomorrow we’ll be taking a long break until after the New Year.

Here are a few suggestions I have for Christians who are wondering where they should start reading their Bible.

(By the way, this is my very favorite Bible…the one I have sitting next to me right now!!)

Where to Start Reading the Bible

1. Psalms – I love the Psalms. In fact, there are seasons when I just read the Psalms, especially when I am going through a difficult season in life.

Making Your Home A Haven Series : From All Over The Internet  Part 1 (Comments From Sarah)

Cook things with pleasant aromas like homemade bread, pies, and cookies. Don’t wait to have a reason to make something special – do it simply to show love to your family. Invite your kids and/or hubby to cook along side of you – make memories in the kitchen – test tasting, being creative, laughing and loving. Remember the importance of dinner time around the table as a family.

Live out the fruit of the Spirit this week by showing
love, goodness and faithfulness to your family.

6 Top Bible Study Blogs for Christian Women ⋆ A Little R & R

When I look for a Bible study blog, I want to make sure that they not only offer great ideas and resources, but that they are also not afraid to confront a hard truth. This is why my list of Bible study blogs is so short; because I simply didn’t want to add anyone to the list that I truly don’t stand behind 100%!The Bible is full of hard truths, as well as encouragement and grace. We have to be able to accept and digest both, or we will be out of balance in our Christian walk.
